Jeremy Schmidt 2X72 belt grinder

Post by acourtjester »

I wanted another belt grinder so I bought Jeremy Schmidt's plans for his belt grinder (great project :D). Many others out there but this one hit all the right spots for me. He had many non-standard steel parts which he cut by hand and supplied drawing of them. I redrew them in TurboCad and used my table to cut them from 3/8" steel. Attached are images and a video of the finished project.

Great looking belt sander. I have wanted to make one of these for years but just never take the time to do it. Some day. Great job!!

The attached images show what I needed the lathe for which includes resizing the drive wheel on the motor. The aluminum wheel for the idler and the 2 on the platen can be bought on Ebay and other places, and a drive wheel if you use a different motor..And the last image shows bushing I turned from UHMW plastic for the casters :D

You have done a fine job there Tom, I was impressed by his build as well, hoping to one day have a go myself if I ever get the time!
Great work with the video as well I always enjoy your productions.
By the way when you are hole marking what pierce delay do you have set? I use zero sec and you get a very short blip, just enough to mark it.

I don't see much difference there to what I use Tom except I have pierce height and cut height the same (1.5mm)

Maybe it's in the post you are using, I'm using 11J.

It's only a quick blip and a bit easier on the drill, first pierce is a longer fire so I try to have marking after another op or give it a quick fire before the first pierce.

I did put the first punch mark outside the usable parts but I think I used to many amps. I sold the table that used that post processor this table uses another simpler post processor. I will continue to improve the process I use until I get the results you show. :D I found using a carbide center drill to start the drilling process removed the problem of bit breakage.

I updated my grinder with a new attachment I designed for grinding a straight edge on metal plates.

Do you think his design would work fine by using all 1/4" steel instead of 3/8"? I have a ton (literally) of 1/4" sheet laying around and not very much 3/8"

Yes I think 1/4" would work fine but would try to use some 3/8" steel where the wheels are supported. This is because of the bolts the wheels run on are only supported on one side, would not want them to twist. This would cause the belt to not track correctly even though there is not a great amount of pressure from the belt tension.

I spent months looking at grinders and never did it after a build and materials list. :Wow

This may give you a little more adjustability, peck delay & %; for your marking, works very well for me.
I use a 1/8" circle, in the drawing but its adjustable as well.

Great work there acourtjester, bet that saved you a significant amount of time vs. doing it by hand like Jeremy!

Loving the design of the grinder and planning to build one, how many hours of work was it roughly for you to do all the welding, drilling etc?

Cheers,
Lukas

I really don't remember but I had a few time saving things like plasma cutting the parts, using square tube in place of welding up the tube as Jeremy did. I also tack welded some of the like parts together and ground the mounting surface so the hole were aligned with it. Many of the parts were cut from a 3/8" X 6" flat bar as I cannot handle a 3/8" sheet.

I did find a bunch of 3/8 scraps around my shop. Enough for all the parts even the tube, although I don't think I'm going to go that route as I have lots of 2" receiver tube available. But I'm now debating on even going with Jeremy's design. I'm just not sure I'll use it in the horizontal position much.

What sayeth you @Acourtjester?

Do you use the horizontal position much?

I'm talking with your belt sander...

It is useful to have and if building on I would be sure to include the horizontal option. Most of the YouTube videos show they all have it. I have used it to make the 2 sides of a plate parallel, and as Jeremy points out you can put and interesting finish on the ground edge of parts too. If trying to put a straight edge on a long part it is easier to handle it in the horizontal plane.

Jester, what motor/vfd did you go with? I’m going with Jeremy’s plans as well, as soon as I can find a motor and vfd that’s reasonable. Been watching FB/CL for a few months

This post shows the motor and VFD from the grinder, I bought them from Amazon. Now if you have an 220 VAC outlet close to where you are using the grinder I would go for 2 HP 3PH not a lot of difference in the price.
