Multi Layered Plaque
A buddy of mine sent this pic and asked me to make him one that is 12" tall for his nephew who works for the Los Angeles Sherriff's Department.
I would have liked to have made it a little larger but it is already heavy at 12 gauge..

Re: Multi Layered Plaque
Fairly easy to generate a file to cut just drop back to say 16 Ga. to keep the weight down. There are many posts about layered projects you can use the search function in the upper right to look around.

Re: Multi Layered Plaque
Thanks David,
i Used 30 lb indoor/ outdoor adhesive tape and metal spacer tabs that I fabricated from the same sheet.
I have welded tabs and threaded studs in the past too, but this will work fine, especially since he is hanging it on the wall.
There is a keyhole hanger bracket welded in the back so that it can be easily hung
If he wants more I will talk him into aluminum. I like the depth of 12 or even 10 gauge. Aluminum will lighten things up a bit..

Thanks acourtjester, I will definitely do that. I even have 16 and 20 ga. in my shop, but opted for thicker to give it more depth, acourtjester wrote: ↑Fri Jul 17, 2020 11:57 pm Fairly easy to generate a file to cut just drop back to say 16 Ga. to keep the weight down. I do not do many layered pieces, so weight is not something I think about too often. I like doing more mechanical parts and such, but my wife and friends always want the artsy stuff. I am an Industrial Sheet Metal Worker by trade, so I tend to like to overkill stuff. Not always a good thing!
I have about 1 sq ft of 12 gauge black iron in this thing, probably closer to 2/3 of a sq ft. so its less than 4 lbs. still pretty heavy for such a small wall hanger. I generated the file in less than 5 minutes and chopped it up in DesignEdge in about an hour then generated separate pieces from that picture.
I have about 4 h-5 hours into it..

Good job. To reduce weight in the future, you might consider using thicker steel where you think it is necessary, but lighter ga. where it is not. Like the background yellow piece. Just my 2 cents.

Re: Multi Layered Plaque
Looks fantastic. Great job. i do allot of layered jobs and 16 gauge as always worked fine for me. I try to keep it light especially if the dimensions are quite big.

Thanks levesquea,
It was a fun little project. I will make it with thinner material next time.
Its amazing how layers make things pop. I loved your layered blue crane, and the fire pit that you did too!

Re: Multi Layered Plaque
His Boss liked his sign, and asked for one 48" tall for their building,, Lol!
I will definitely be decreasing the gauge for this one!
I told him that it'd be too heavy, and he agreed..

The bigger they get the better heavy steel is or they get to flimsy/floppy. I just warn them of the weight and make sure they anchor it properly. His Boss liked his sign, and asked for one 48" tall for their building,, Lol!

By the way I am a retired commercial Sheet Metal Worker, so I also tend to lean toward " build it sturdy". It's funny though because most people equate weight with quality and value and will pay a little more.
