Geodesic fire pit
Hey there, this is my first post here and figured id try in come in strong! I've been working on this fire ball on and off for couple weeks now and today got it welded up. This is my first real project I've made and drawn myself other than simple parts.
I had a hard time finding sizes for the shapes so I figured 5.5" for side length for the pentagons and hexagons ended up 26", then went to town with inkscape and viacad. Its a nice size for a small yard but definitely could have went bigger.
I've been welding and fabricating for a while now so that was the easy part of this for me. Around 3 hours start to finish....a fraction of what i spent on the computer drawing and figuring... i only welded the outside corners so ill be watching to see if it warps after some use.
I'm really happy with how it turned out. let me know your thoughts
heres the files i came up with!

Re: Geodesic fire pit
can you tell us how much material it took to make it? I have a charity auction for our local babe ruth base ball team coming up and I think this one would do well.

This 26" one used almost a full 4x8 sheet cut from 3/16".
a 34" ball used 1.5 4x8 sheets. However depending on your nesting ability you will use less. I did my best but had a lot of wasted space but just cutting in rows.

Today I started building your pit with some baseball themed stuff for the local baseball teams charity auction. Thanks much for the file.

Re: Geodesic fire pit
This is a stupid question, but what's the best way to hold all those shapes when you're tacking them in? Adjustable magnets?

Re: Geodesic fire pit
Not stupid! What I do is draw around the base on the bench in chalk and do row 1 against the chalk, holding them by hand or propping them up. Once you do the first two the rest are easy enough. Use the chalk lines to keep you on course. Turn it over and tack the base on.
Turn it back the right way up again and then just hand hold each piece when you tack it but its easier if you move the pit about as you need to rather than doing it all as positional welding.
