Jack Daniels sign for bar top

Post by SRdesign »

Made this for a friend of mine. He is going to inlay it in wood and fill the bar top with epoxy. Will get pics once it’s complete

Nice job! What method did you use to deburr the edges before applying your paint?
Thanks,
David

Very nice! Looks like you spent a lot of time on that design and the cleanup after the cut. Super clean. Would love to see the finished bar top when complete :Like :Like

There is no paint on it. The one picture looks darker because of the angle that I was holding it. I was trying to reduce the glair from my lights in the shop. I normally just use a wire cup on an angle grinder and some acetone to clean up anything I make. I don’t paint too many things, especially not freebies like this

Thanks. I did a manual trace from an image on the web using Inkscape, then doctored it a little bit for plasma cutting. The scroll work turned out pretty good, it’s only 10” x 14.5”

Chris - there are lots of images below. Maybe you can find one or more that you like and combine them to create something unique to cut. Let me know if you need any pointers on using Inkscape to work on these.

I will as long as he sends me a pic. He’s in North Carolina and I’m in Florida… or else I would take the pic myself. But I want to see what it looks like too!

This is the original, it would be good practice to try and trace it.

This is pretty much how I traced this image. The left and right, top and bottom scroll work are all mirror images of one trace.

Thanks for posting your image. This one will be easy to auto trace with Inkscape. See images below.
And will be good practice for those wishing to learn how to do it.
It's basically import image to Inkscape, then "Path, Trace Bitmap, then edit to add bridges, stencil letters, and remove circles from around the 7's.
Of course it would also be fun to manually trace as well.

I started to do a manual trace, but at the rate I go it would probably take me several hours or more. That mirror tool is handy, though.

How long did it take you to manually trace it? I'm sure that the more you do it, the faster you get.
Thanks,

I've watched this video once before a while back and picked up some great pointers on manually tracing. I need to watch it again with an emphasis on how he mirrored his parts. Thanks for posting the link.

So I did “trace bitmap” first. But I wasn’t happy with how each scroll was different from the other when they are supposed to be the same. So I traced one scroll and one “7”. Then I decided that if I’m tracing I should just trace the whole thing so it’s symmetrical. The only thing that I left from the trace bitmap were the letters. It took me about an hour from start to finish. If I would have started with the mindset of just manually tracing I probably could have done it in 30-40 minutes. I’m still learning little tips and tricks. The Inkscape user manual you posted in another thread is very handy. They key to manually tracing is learning how to use as little nodes as possible and stretching the lines between the nodes. I’m still trying to get good at that.

Just for fun, I checked 4 of the scrolls to see how closely they match up to each other. I think for a plasma cut part, one might hard pressed to tell the difference after the part is cut. But they are not all exactly the same. Another possibility would be to keep one of them and copy/rotate/mirror to create four matching scrolls. This would have been faster for me to do than to manually trace one of them and then mirror. But in any case, this was a great opportunity to practice Inkscape manual tracing and mirroring.

Nice job! What settings do you use when you do a trace bitmap? I can get great results on a clear black and white image, but not on something with a “busy” background

You may get better results with using the Paint program first (using rdj357 instructions) to give you a more crisp image, then trace in Inkscape.

I cleaned it first with Paint.net.

Here is how I normally do it.
