I gave that some thought. Square rod would collect plasma dust more easily. The contact point between the flat wheel and the round rod can "wander" a bit up and down, and still maintain contact. These CHINESE switches are not accurate enough to run a flat wheel along a flat bar. The switch levers are somewhat aligned, but not enough for such precision. I may have to bend or tweak them a bit to get them all to cooperate.

It is all an experiment, so ...

I have not installed the bearings yet. They will arrive on October 30th. However, I wanted to mount the switches to the carriage car to see how they would fit, and to experiment a bit with running them along a 16-bank track of 3/16" stainless steel rods. The gantry car is twice as wide, with 32 switches.

I used two of the contact screws as mounting screws. The raised center hump pokes through the car. It worked perfectly!

Gotta love SENDCUTSEND! Design it in DesignEdge, and send them the DXF file. The laser cut and deburred stainless steel plate arrives at my door a few days later!

I just ordered four sets of these glide rails to set up the machine. I have eight sets of the shorter 1500mm glide rails, but I needed the longer length (2,027mm each) for this project.

These glide rails will also be used to move the carriage and gantry on the table. I am going to ditch the springs and cam followers!

A friend is visiting for a few days from the west coast, and I am dealing with other TO DOs that are occupying my time and energy. I will get on this when I have the chance. I have changed my design. Rather than have the track follow the PlasmaCam gantry and carriage with the cam follower bearings and springs and such, I am going to REPLACE the gantry and carriage with X and Y cars that run on dual parallel glide rails, driven by the PlasmaCam motors and gear racks only. The carriage will still use the Z motor, but that will also be on dual glide rails as well.

I spent the day with the help of a good friend, installing the new 12K WARN Ford Performance Winch onto the front of my 2022 F250. A little blood, a lot of cursing, lingering sore muscles ... and now it is DONE!

I will post a final photo soon. I have to fabricate some sort of cover plate for the center grill that is no longer a part of the truck. Good thing I have a cnc plasma table and some stainless steel to work with

The stainless steel bearings arrived today. I will install them onto the switches when I return from a trip up north.

I was able to get the Amp Research Extreme retractable floorboards installed. I bought them in April, but could not install them alone, and with the help of a friend who is visiting from California, we got them done yesterday. We also installed the front and rear dashcam today (Saturday)

More to do!

Joe

Gone now for three days. Headed up to Illinois to visit elderly relatives before winter sets in. Then I will get back on track.

What a small world! I have a friend in Franklin KY who has a sister, who also lives in Oswego Illinois, just around the corner from my cousin in Oswego. What are the odds?

Back home now, with even more projects on the books! I will set up my plasma table again. I removed the plasma cutter and carriage in order to deal with another issue on another table, but now I can put the table back together again. I will first focus on drag chains to get rid of the STUPID swinging boom arm over the table.

Also, the lasers are becoming more prominent in my future plans. LOTS of boxes are arriving, and they are all waiting for the upper level of the shop to be insulated before dragging them up there.

They were demonstrating their newest product, a simple silk screen printing kit that allows you to use a low powered laser to burn multi-colored intricate designs into silk screens that have an emulsion coating, and then use water based inks to do silk screening of T-shirts and other things. I guess you "cure" (read: SET) the inks with ultraviolet light, or heat.

They screened a pumpkin onto a cardboard box to demo the process of doing this on thicker materials, and they also screen printed three T-shirts. So they put a T-shirt into each of three boxes, and drew viewers names to send them out.

Of course, I decided to buy the whole kit. So I bought a second S1 laser (or technically, the eighth laser) :-? with the accessory that registers the screens via a mount that aligns everything both on the laser, and the screen printing frame. Then you use them like any ordinary silk screening process.

The nice things is, they made METAL screen frames with quick clips, so there is no need to build wooden screen frames, and struggle to stretch the screen over the frame perfectly. You lay a new screen over the frame, clip it into place and burn the design with the laser. This, of course, allows for very detailed designs, as a laser can give you single hairs or eyelashes on a head, and other fine detail that the silk screening process normally does not offer unless you pay big bucks for the premium screens.

Of course I realize that this means I will buy a metal frame for every screen I wish to keep on a shelf for future use, since you cannot remove the screen and get them to register correctly by reinstalling them later on. I will experiment with this a bit, and then decide whether to expand on it or not. Knowing me, I will probably end up with a hundred metal frames on a custom storage rack.

Among my MANY jobs over my lifetime, I worked for a silk screening company in Provo, Utah, up in The Land of Morm. As a Catholic, (read: Unrepentant Apostate) that was quite an adventure! I suspect that Christians in Muslim countries know exactly what I am talking about.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apostasy

I NEVER win ANYTHING! Now I cannot say that any longer. :HaHa
