weather vane

just looking for suggestions on making a weather vane, how thick of material a guy should use. customer wants it to be 4" long 20" tall.

I've made a few different designs using all the same N,S,E,W crossbars. Some that come to mind are two different roosters, a moon and some birds off the top of my head. I use 1/2" solid rod for the stake and weld a 4" section of 1/2" OD pipe on top. Then I weld a 7/16" rod (I think...) on the chicken and sharpen the end. I'm out of town right now but I think I have some pics on my FB account... let me look...
