The 4x8 Laser Table is One Step Closer to Operational

Post by Joe Jones »

We moved the 4x8 into the new shop extension and are preparing to hook it up and get it online. It will still be two weeks or more until it is functional. The dealer will send out a rep from Las Vegas who will assemble the machine, and give me two days of training on it. I am really looking forward to this!

Me too. I first plan to use it to create custom suspension components for the coffin trailers I will build and sell later in the year.

We started it today. We are in the learning stage. Still, I keep asking myself, "WHY did you wait so long to get one?!?"

The fan will be moved to the outside. It is loud. The laser sliced through 14 gauge steel like an XACTO knife, and also through 16 ga stainless steel! I just can't wipe the smile off of my face!

I just landed our first paid job with this lase table. i will be cutting sets of custom table leg gussets for a man who builds fantastic steel tables with shadow boxes beneath a tempered glass top. The shadow boxes display things like a pocket knife collection, or handguns, or coins, etc.

I gave him a good deal on them, because he is going to supply the 1/4" steel plate they will be cut from, and he wants then raw off of the table, with no clean up.

I made these for him previously, but they were cut on the plasma table,. They looked ... "okay." But I was not happy with them. These gussets cut with the new laser are razor sharp and absolutely magnificent!

We will start with seven sets of eight gussets, and he will order more as he builds and sells the tables.

Now we are prospecting for more work. My local welding shop is excited to know there is a laser in this small town of 8,000 people, and there is a man who builds and sells custom pallet rack systems. He is also looking to have his base plates and other components made locally, and more affordably. Well, I'm your guy!

The XTOOL Metal Fab unit arrives in about a week. It is all coming together!

They are awesome. 2" square tubing with a 1/8" wall thickness. Six or eight (?) shadow boxes in the top with tempered glass over all of them. Items on display beneath the glass. Steel gussets with gun logos on each leg. He sells the tables for $3,500.00 each.

I know this is plasmaspider, but I must confess ... watching this laser slice through steel is orgasmic!

I will ask him if I can post a photo or two. He may wish to keep his design "discrete." My shops are 'YUGE, but his shop is almost as well equipped in 1/5th the space. He has a lot of fabrication skills, and he is like me. He can make nearly anything he can imagine.

I can appreciate him wanting to remain discrete, I just enjoy seeing others work.

Yeah ... We live in a society where too many people are perfectly comfortable ripping off the designs and artwork of others.
