I use this type, but I'm sure the type you pictured would work well too.
Thanks!

I am intrigued, what do you have in mind for it. Like a box sign?

Wouldn't it look great if the stars, the #1 and IRAQ were cut-outs and not cut-throughs? Let me preface by saying that this is all trade secrets. So, how do you do it and put it all together? Easy...and mildly difficult. There are a few ways you can do it, employing sometimes multiply methods. PEM standoffs are one method and one of the best ways.
Yes, PEM's, but finding ppl with a PEMserter (Installs PEM's) can be hard. But it absolutely makes these pop off the wall. The "IRAQ" on the front is a little more complicating because it's not wide enough for PEM's (typically). So I use 3M's double sided close cellular tape for those. This tapes is so strong, you cannot rip it off once it's laid down. Alternate colors of black and white, for example, the the contrast makes the plates stand out. The spaces very depending on how many layers you use but you'll probably use 10/32" length of the BSO044010C. Google that part number. This will leave about 1/4" between the plates. Alternatively, you can just use standoffs with small screws, and hide the screws behind the letters which are then taped with 3M
This may not be apropos for a single project. And the cost certainly goes up. But it just doesn't compare to any other. If you want something more simplistic, just put another piece that's a half inch plate behind what you currently have. Lets do a trial run. Send me your dxf. I'll put a key hole and everything on it so it can be hung on a wall. Give me the size you'd like to have.

My goal is to make it as close to the actual sign. Send a pic if you complete it.
