Hypthotherm powermax85 torch bad threads help please

Post by magee16701 »

I run dynatorch cnc plasma table with a powermax 85 plasma cutter at work. I have been running this machine for almost 3 years now. Today i was using it and the retaining cap was screwing on kind weird i thought and it wouldnt hit the sensor to tell the machine its back on all the time either. And i was cutting some steel with it and it just stopped and gave the cap off error. So i pulled the cap off and see that the threads on the torch didnt look to good and the ones on the back were about gone there is still some threads but not enought for it to work.So i was wondering how to fix this its the longer machine torch that comes with it. But can we re thread it(prob a dumb question but gotta ask) or where can we buy what we need to fix it i think its called the torch body right.the o ring is right above the threads. And also wondering how could this happen i am only person who uses this as far as i know and i never put on to tight i dont think . please help

You have probly been overtightening the shield for a while. They only need a hand snug fit. You may be able to save it if you use a little Teflon spray on a shield and a little metal epoxy resin.

I had t100 machine torch and it did the same thing( twice) you can get a replacement torch body(the guts) and is a pretty easy install...even came with a manual.

The threads wear out from the normal day to day abrasive dust from plasma cutting. If you clean the threads periodically.....they likely will last longer. If the threads on the torch body are worn out...the fix is to replace the torch body. There is a parts breakdown in your operators manual with part numbers.

You can go to www.hypertherm.com , click on "where to buy" and follow the directions....it will tell you all of the authorized Hypertherm dealers in your area. Any dealer can give you the price, you can find the part number for the torch body or the complete torch and lead assembly in the operators manual.
