Material Mover
http://mobilept.com/stackers/mw750.html
I'm considering this piece of equipment to move material or for that matter anything in the shop.
My table will be a 4X4 so I'm thinking with forks 36" long and a max spread of 24" I will be OK.
They said they would reverse the taper on the fork to a downward incline so material sliding of would not be just dropping of the ends. It will lift 750 lbs to 60".
Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated . .

Re: Material Mover
Looks like a nice piece of equipment and would come in handy in most shops. If I did not have overhead hoist's and trolleys available I might look into one of those.

What are they asking for one of these? I've been searching high & low for a forklift or a solution like this, and now I'm thinking I may just build one! I think I can make one for around 600 or less..

Re: Material Mover
Hmmmm I've found some older running forklifts in my area for around that price.... I have an electric winch from horrible freight that would work great for This project..... I have a bunch of 1/4" scrap that I can use for the various gussets, so this is looking like a doable project!CNCCAJUN wrote:About $1,500.00 + freight . . .

NO room for a forklift.
Not enough height clearance with overhead door.
Do not want anything else I have to maintain.

Re: Material Mover
I know, I barely have enough room as it is, this may be a perfect solution for me.... I'm going to check with my buddy who does heavy fab work to see how much of the steel I can get from him at a good price and put one together.... I'll let you know how it goes, but I really think this is a fairly easy project, and I can think of several attachments and uses for it when it's finished!CNCCAJUN wrote:NO room for a forklift.

Re: Material Mover
Reading this reminds me of some words I read.
"A plasma table is an accessory for an overhead hoist." Forklift should have been added into that.
I learnt about that as soon as a dragged a 4 x 8 sheet of just 1/8" steel onto my table for the first time.
Keith.

I found a Presto lift like this on the NH Craigslist last year. Paid $250, it needed a new battery, regular marine battery for $50. Works perfect in my shop.

They work great. I had to modify mine a bit by adding fork extensions and some plate dogs. My water table won't allow me to slide plate onto the slats. I have to lift it over the sides and set it on the slats.

Re: Material Mover
Where I spend most of my time (day job) we had a lift similar to what Jim has. It worked well but needed a battery, they don't last long in an industrial setting... people run it until it's completly dead then charge it for two days. The battery lasts maybe 6 months. Dry cell batteries last about two years.
Anyway we haven't used it for a couple of years so I offered them $50.00 for it. The super moron I was dealing with gave it away to his buddy for free. or he kept the money for himself.
So I started drawing a different lifting tool to use... just didn't have time to finish drawing it let alone building it. Once I find the drawing and finish it I will post it. It is designed to lift steel from my trailer by pivoting on a set of bearings and bring it up to table height. Right now the only issue I see is storage and trying to slide the sheet on top of the slats. They are getting pretty chewed up and new slats will only solve the problem for a short while.
Will keep you posted

Re: Material Mover
Decided to build one, with all the stuff I have laying around the shop It shouldn't take much to put it together. I already have the uprights cut, and most of the base welded up.... It's coming together nicely, and hopefully I'll have most of it finished by the end of the weekend! Pics to follow....

Mike you are going to fall in love with something (anything) that keeps you from having to horse a full sheet onto the table. Too much of that will make you old and broke down (kinda like me).

Re: Material Mover
I posted some progress pictures in the project gallery, don't know why I did it there, just tired I guess, anyway, this is what I got done today... This is going to be so nice to have in the shop! I'll do a full write up if anybody is interested, but just looking at pictures of several models and it's pretty easy to knock one together without too much trouble. I pretty much just designed on the fly and when I needed a piece from the table I just went and drew it up and cut it... What a great day in the shop!
I'll try to get the carriage for the forks finished tomorrow and then I have to figure out what to use for the forks!

If so, the going price for it is $3,600.00 ! ! !

It's the obsolete version of that model with a 1500 lb capacity. $600 on Craigslist and worth every penny.

Well I didn't get to powdercoating today, but we have liftoff! I need to figure out forks, and do the final welding before coating and assembly! So far this is working out really well, and I can tell it's going to be a huge help around the shop... Here's a picture and a video of it in action!

Oldsarge,
Fork material, 2" x 2" x 36" x .250w tubing. They are rated at maximum load of 1200 lbs (tested to 1600) and work well for compact tractors under 45 hp.

Vern
Vern,
Like the idea, so at lunch today I ran down to the steel yard and got a 12' stick of 2x3 tube .250 and had them cut it in half at a 60 degree angle. I'm going to cut the 45s at two feet which will give me the 24" back pieces I need for the carriage and approx 4' forks. Cheaper than used forklift forks, and plenty strong for the load capacity of the lift.... Should have it wrapped up by the weekend!

Re: Material Mover
When I built the shop I didn't know I'd be putting a CNC plasma machine in it. Just planned to move heavy things. The I beam is a 36 lbs/ft W beam. I think it's a 16" web. Engineering says it will support over 4000 lbs. I picked up the 2 ton CM hoist with powered trolley on Ebay for $800 shipped. There is enough room to lift a 5x10 over a 5x10 on the material cart. I think it's 13.5' to the bottom of the I beam. The heaviest it has lifted was my 5'x5' platen table at about 3,500 lbs. You could watch the chains stretch.
I've got a couple of 1000 lbs lift magnets that I really don't like to use, but have. For unloading large amounts of heavy plate for a scheduled job, I have unloaded the plate, stored it, and loaded the machine without moving it vertical with the magnets. But only 1/4" or thicker material.
If I had to do it all again, I'd put in a bridge crane. You can find them dirt cheap on Craigslist if you look in larger, industrial cities like Houston or Dallas. My walls are 9' 6" tall so I don't know if I've got room to upgrade in the future. I told my wife I should have built it bigger!
