Post by weld it »

I have a customer who wants to know if anyone can tell him if there is a way to weld two galvanized steel parts together, then pretreat them, and powder coat them from rusting.

Thanks

galvanized sucks to weld, its not something you want to breath either.

Best to grind off the galvanizing where you need to weld.

Or if you can, build the parts first then have the whole thing galvanized after. (and then powdercoat if you need color or whatever...)

Welding galvanized is extremely toxic and causes a simptom referred to as metal fume fever. It can make you ill, vomiting and diahreah, blood pressure changes, pneumonia, chest pains, nausia, fever, chills, headache, acute lung injuries and causes cancer, can also cause loss of consciousness within a matter of minutes in extreme conditions. Only weld it if you are very familiar with doing so and have all the proper ventilation, gas masks and safety equipment.

I won't weld it but we do blast and powder it mostly for the appearance of zinc is what it kind of looks like with a 20% gloss but I damn sure won't weld it if you do drink a lot of milk do it in a well ventilated area and wear a cartridge mask.
