The best thing I have found to put acid in that is big enough is one of the solid plastic swimming pools that they sell at Wally world. Leaving a piece in the acid over night usually works good.

I got a couple of 32 gallon rubbermaid garbage cans with lids. They work great for the smaller parts but anything over 2 ft. - 30 inches needs to have something bigger. One garbage can has the acid, the other has a baking soda mix. I dip in one than into the other and then rinse. I use a small laundry basket with small round holes and a rope to dunk lots of small parts, that way they don't get lost in the bottom of the can and I don't have to go arm-swimming to find them. Larger parts I just set them in and retrieve with long rubber gloves.

Soaking time - usually about 2-3 hours for quick mill scale removal and softening the dross. Leave in overnight and nearly all the dross and mill scale is history. Most times I can take straight to the sand blaster or hit it quickly with a grinder flap disc for the most stubborn dross and then blast.

how do you cover it well enough to keep the acid from dissipating (escaping) ?

I don't,I have it under a shed roof and I just add a little water occasionally.

We use a rubbermaid tank like you use for watering horses and cattle. Hubby built a wooden lid and lined it with insulated foam board that fits just inside the tank. It works great for most pieces..
