45XP drag and mechanised tip questions

Post by littlebossDWH »

I had a Miller 625 Spectrum for about 15 years and used extended tips 90% of the time. I only used drag tips for long cuts with a straight edge.

I got this new 45XP with hand and machine torches and it cuts great but I hate the drag tip. It's hard to see what you are doing if for example you are cutting a small notch in something. It was way easy to just "aim the flame" with the extended tip on the Miller.
Which of the Hypertherm consumables could I use to be equivalent to the extended tip on my Miller? One of the gouge tips?

Thanks

Great suggestion! Those do look like they will afford better visibility for seeing the cut line if free hand cutting. When I am hand cutting with either my 45xp or Thermal Dynamics cutter I am usually using a cutting guide or fence. Also the FineCuts offer better visibility using the deflector.

I heard back from Hypertherm..

They recommend the tips highlighted in yellow. They also mention the tips won't last as long.

I would prefer to use the 220955 deflector for any cutting .125" or thinner, better vision as you mentioned you like. I would use the 220948 for cutting thicker than .125" as it will protect the nozzle during extended pierce times. If you are using ohmic sensing method you will be forced to use the 220948.

I just put a 220955 on it, didn't even know that I had one! This makes it about like my Miller was. Only difference is Miller had two different length electrodes.
