Break Relief Line for Bending

So I need to Make a bracket and want to cut a straight line so it will bend in the break easily. How do I do this? If I draw a square the lead in is too big. I just need it to pierce and run straight.

The width of your straight relief cuts depends on how thick your material is and the angle you wish to bend your bracket to. Whether you are using a straight line or a thin rectangular cutout, set your pierce lead-in to zero for these cuts. If you are bending something like 11 ga. steel, then I would recommend a thin rectangular cut as opposed to a single straight line.

Yes I did get it completed. Thanks It turned out great they love it.

This is in SheetCam for the lead in/out, for thin metal use no offset for a line also.

What program are you using to create your cut paths and g-code? I had assumed you were using Inkscape for your cad, and Sheetcam for your cam/post processing.

By the way, the internet tell me that it is possible to create g-code with Inkscape. I tried it, but It keeps throwing errors and even though it does produce come code, it has no actual paths. Not sure what I am doing wrong. In any case, it didn't look like there was any function to set lead-ins. I suppose they would need to be drawn in as part of the drawing.

Not sure if this is what you were asking, but you can use the Draw Bezier Curves and Lines Tool to create simple lines as opposed to rectangles.

Here is an example of at test bend with 11 ga. steel using thin rectangular slots for the relief cuts. I cut relief slots, but as I recall the width was less than the material thickness. You can see looking at the outside of the bend that if the relief cuts are not wide enough, then there may be possible interference with the edges of the slots on the inside corner.

This was a test bend for a larger part constructed from 11 ga. steel where the bends were to all be made by hand, and then tack welded to retain the desired shape of the finished part.

So I use inkscape for the gcodes.

So I am cutting 11 gauge. Once I draw them then the lead in/out will be bigger then the relief rectangle.

The square you are showing is similar to what i am trying to do however i am bending it past a 90 so i would need the rectangle to at least be 1/8"

I do this all the time as well. I just did 10ga. Made a box and used the .125" relief, double box or however how long you need this to make your bend. Then in sheetcam. I assume you are using sheetcam. Make it a separate layer. In that layer you would do an inside offset and set your lead in at about .060" or so. Make no lead out. If your lead in is larger than your bend relief Sheetcam will tell you with a warning.

HC - I have never used Inkscape for creating cut paths and g-code. But I will check it out to see if I can find a solution to your question.

HC - Here is one way to do it. Set the straight line for no lead-ins, and set the rectangle with holes for lead-ins. Do this before you create the g-code.
The screen shots below show my process. Let me know if you have any questions or comments about this.
