powder coating with polyethylene anyone??

Post by dgeorgester »

So here's what I'm doing... I'm casting syntactic foam with is a mixture of epoxy, hardener and glass micro bubbles. I build two sets of molds out of steel and coated the outside with high heat automotive paint. I coat the inside of the molds with PVA and 2 coats of wax. Works well but with overflow and small leaks, it makes a mess on the molds.

I noticed that the plastic garbage bags on my work table is polyethylene (PE) and it epoxy does not bond at all with PE. Normally, steel would be heated to about 280dec C - 350deg C and dipped in a fluidize PE powder bed. Considering the size of my molds and concerned about warping, I was thinking I could cover the inside and outside of my molds with a layer of polyethylene using a standard powder coating gun for polyester or urethane powders. It would keep them clean and minimize preping time.

Has this been done before?

Cheers,
Georges
