Looking good, and making me wonder why my sample pack is still sitting on the shelf unused.

Don't be scared to try 'em! It's really a lot easier than you might think & the customers love the look.Bigrhamr wrote:Looking good, and making me wonder why my sample pack is still sitting on the shelf unused.

Re: a couple more trys
The only obstacle I have to overcome is a good place to work with the chemicals safely as I dont have a good ventelated spot inside where the water source is and no water source outside where it is ventilated

Re: a couple more trys
Can you expand on the part "when done right"? I have yet to get my pieces looking like a shiny new penny, although they do turn out nice. Seems to me that when the chemical first hits the metal I get the color I'm looking for, but by the time I've put down the bottle and reached for the water hose, it turns darker. Guess I'm not quick enough. Bill, does the chemical need to be diluted possibly? I've been using it full strength.

I just got the sample pack a week ago and was dying to try it. Being 25 deg outside we couldnt use the hose etc, but I found by the time I sprayed the copper on and got to the bottom of my piece the already sprayed areas were turning pinkish. Any hints other than work faster lol? The look is great so I am sure it's operator error at this point.

Re: a couple more trys
that was my problem too, i did not have a water source to stop the reaction right away that is one of the most important parts, next to force drying it right awaycoupebuilder wrote:jmsrbrt wrote:Can you expand on the part "when done right"? Experimenting today, and if you can find a way to DIP your part as opposed to spraying it, it should turn out nicer. At least mine did. Problem is finding a plastic container big enough. Bob.

Don't dilute the Copper FX. If you do, it will peel due to the dilution of etching acid. The MAXIMUM time you can leave the Copper FX on the steel is 4-5 Seconds! If you have a large piece, it really does pay to have the pressurized, pump sprayer. On smaller pieces a trigger-spray bottle is just fine.
I don't recommend immersion techniques as it contaminates the Copper Solution, but you can do it that way if you prefer.
If it's turning too dark or pinkish, that's either one of two things: Steel isn't polished enough OR...you're leaving the Copper FX on too long. I have my Copper in one hand & my garden spray nozzle in the other hand.
It takes a little practice. As for no water source outside....can you run a hose from the inside?? Or, if you're doing
smaller pieces, you could have your rinse water in a 2-3 gallon pump-up weed sprayer. It doesn't take a huge volume of clean water to neutralize the patina.

Re: a couple more trys
Here is a first try for me...
It seemed to go OK. I prepared as explained in Bill's book. I did this at night though. I took the picture right after spraying the clear, which really had not gone clear yet. I thought it would be the pinkie/salmon color mentioned but when dry it was perfect. I used the copperFX and then a tiny bit of pewter to finish. Looks good in the light.
I also found a display of the nice blow guns at my local hardware store. I have walked by them many times and had not given them much thought. Works great.
