Not plasma, but laser

I Have a plasma table among a whole lot of other things. Including a C02 Laser. When I was browsing, Gary put a file for a gun, so I thought that would make a nice desk topper in acrylic. I engraved on it as well but it is hard to take a good pic with my cell cam, it says, "Complaint Department, Press button for service"

I really enjoy the laser it is super easy to use, acts just like a printer.
Then I took a pic off the net of a Datsun 510 wagon, just like mine, and engraved it into a piece of baltic birch ply.

Are CO2 lasers way expensive? I don't know anything about them..

good job with your laser man...I lovem...only I use it to cut metal ...we dont get to mess with wood and acrylic...if I had a foot i could...but all in all good job man!!

We lucked out with the one we got, its a Universal Laser System, and new they are super expensive, But you can get a cheap china one that will do the job for pretty reasonable price. I picked this one up on ebay, took a chance because it was from a surplus company and they didnt know how to test, but I have about 3k into it after I got it shipped. If I were to list it on ebay as a working tested unit it could get over 10k. But thats a Universal.

Cool stuff. So I assume it doesn't cut metal? What all does it cut or engrave? How thick? How fast? How many watts?
How big of a table or work area? Is that enough questions?

Nope wont cut metal, it will etch glass but not cut it, It has a 60watt Synrad tube installed. The workspace is 12"x24" It depends on the material you are cutting, If I were cutting a pine board, I have cut 3/4" in one pass, but get some plywood and sometimes it struggles to get 1/8" in one pass, the resin absorbs lots of power. In acrylic I have cut a piece 1/2" but that was super slow. When I engrave into wood I'm going at 100%power and 50% speed gets me about 0.10"deep.

I have a Univeral "Laser" also, 30Watt. We use it for buring serial plates for the machines we build. I have used it for engraveing/burning into wood, it does an OK job. It uses a standard printer USB cable and you output your file/drawing as a print job. You can then adjust the power/speed/height and hit go. We have a high speed kitchen exhaust fan hooked up to it as it needs some good air flow. We had one guy burn a saying into chopsticks for a wedding reception.

Thats the same reason we bought this, to do serial number and DOT tags. But its all the other stuff that makes it fun.
