Re: Patterned Rust
First of all, thanks for the comments.
1) Soak mill-scale off in acid tank. 20-30 minutes in diluted Muriatic acid.
2) Remove piece, flush with clean water & lay 'dead-flat. (I laid this piece on a pallet, next to my acid tank)
3) Making sure there's no dry spots & the piece is soaking wet, place drops or scraps of steel on surface.
(they need to be clean, no dross & wet)
4) Let pieces dry in sun, don't use any compressed air.
5) Spray entire piece with Rust F/X, don't rinse, just let air dry again.
6) The darkened area at the top was done by dribbling some of my acid tank liquid on top of the Rust F/X,
which "erases" the rust & turns very dark, almost black.
7) Hit the edges with a Scotchbrite pad to highlight. I use a 6" non-woven pad on a Metabo Variable Speed 4.5" grinder.
Very low speed.
8) Clear-coat & you're done.
Sounds kind of involved, but it's really not. The sun does most of the work. If it was hard, I wouldn't do it! LOL

Re: Patterned Rust
Awesome! I have used your rusting chemicals for 3 years now and experiment as well. Some of the pieces I have done in the past where I thought I had messed them up turned out the best! My customers are crazy about the patinas on my work and ask me how many days it will take to "rust" the part. When I show up the next day with the finished piece, they are amazed.
