First EasyScriber run

Post by tiggen »

Running it on a machine torch from a RC 45. Table is a Langmuir Crossfire. Cut height is set to -0.1, 100ipm.

Lines were drawn with AxiDraw in Inkscape (want to say .031 spacing maybe?), looked good in the svg when loaded into Fusion, looked good in the CAM process. Maybe the metal moved (look at the 's' in "lesson"), but I had it weighted down as best I could.

So what should I try next? Thanks in advance.

Your first attempt looks good. But I agree that it would appear that the metal you are engraving moved during the process resulting in the hatch lines not lined up with the outlines of the letters. I would suggest using clamps, double sided tape, or similar to keep the part from moving on the table while you are engraving it.

If the part was engraved first, and then cut from a larger sheet of material - make sure the sheet of material is clamped to the table grates to prevent movement. If your part was already cut and you are engraving it "after the fact", then perhaps make some sort of holding fixture for the part and attach the holding fixture to the table or a sheet of material on the table.

Here is an example where I created a holding fixture to keep this small part from moving while I was cutting a slot in the side. This was done on a cnc router, but the same principle would apply for holding your small part while you are engraving it.

Here are some more pictures of my process. You can click on the link to see them.

If you Google the painter tape method for holding thing on a table you will find what you need for small parts holding. I have used this method for holding thing to my spoil board for routing. You can use it for name plates too.

Tom - thanks for sharing those video links! Lots of different methods to use here, depending on the OP's setup.

Thanks, guys! I will try the super glue and tape. Gonna slow it down a touch and also press a little harder as well.

Any tips for surface prep/finish of aluminum?

You can try a buffing wheel to polish the Aluminum after applying a color to the etching then cover with a clear coating.

Looks great and especially for your first run!

Material moving, loose or wiggly torch (common with some hand torch mounts), or slop in the machine can cause the imperfections you seeing but it looks great!

Thanks for posting and Merry Christmas!
