Vertical bender using JD2 dies

Here is the vertical bender I built, designed to use JD2 Model 3 die sets. You'll notice on the drawing, the hole for the main die pin is undersized--I did that so I could drill it out to 1.25" to press bronze bushings into. All the other holes are just plasma cut.

I cut this from two layers of 3/8" steel just so the holes would be easier to get good quality, but if you wanted to just cut it from thicker material just don't cut the doubler pieces.

The second file I cut from 1/4" steel, and it's to hook the garage door extension spring underneath the ram, to retract everything when you release pressure.

Third file (Word doc) is just a parts list to complete the bender the same way I did mine. By no means is it the only way to do it, it's just my way. If you use different thickness materials, you may need to adjust the bolt and spacer lengths.

dang, that's pretty impressive. I like how clean your work is. I have the JD2 model 32 with the same hydro cylinder, but have it mounted horizontally. I hadn't really thought about doing it vertically. Thanks for posting!

More likely my less advanced DeltaCad. I saved them as a different version, see if it's any better for you.

Also, I noticed I have an extra double hook in the "springmount" file....that's because I bought a spring that was too light, so I had to double them up. If you buy the right spring, you'll just need to use the single.

Very nicely done! With the money you saved you can buy more dies... those suckers add up fast! I just bent up some 1" and it turned out great... Have fun, that's a nice looking bender!

Then you can release pressure, re-pin the die, and continue bending. That was 1.75" .120 tube, being bent into shock hoops--so just under a 180 degree bend. This way is faster, and a WHOLE lot easier than doing it manually. If you want to be really cool, then you can put an electric/hydraulic setup on it and have more power AND lots more speed. The air/hydro cylinder is cheap and fast enough for me though. (for now, anyway...)

The spring can come from any home improvement or garage door supply place. I ordered mine online because I thought I wanted a lighter rate than what I could find at Lowe's....but I was wrong.

I timed it...for a full stroke of the ram with 1.75" .120 DOM, it took about 1:50. Not the quickest thing out there, but WAAAY faster and easier than doing it manually. That ended up being just a hair shy of a 90 degree bend.

Those bronze bushings look perfect-- the #6391K285 is 1.25" OD, 1" ID, 1.5" long.

For all the spacers, I used a piece of tubing (or it may have been pipe) I found in the surplus area of my local steel supplier. Just cut to length and cleaned the ends up on the lathe.
