Few basic software questions for Mach3/Sheetcam

Post by Metriccar »

I wanted to make sure I have this right.

1) Graphic Design Software (such as Corel Draw or Solid Edge 2D) creates a drawing and it is saved as a DXF File.
2) Sheetcam takes that DXF file, creates start/stop points, speed, voltage, etc, and turns it into a TAP file. After that, Sheetcam cannot open the TAP file again, it can only import DXF files or TNG files.
3) Mach3 takes that TAP file and runs it.
4) Mach3 does not recognize changes when I change the "cut profile." This can only be done in Sheetcam (this is the way mine is setup whcih I don't like but that's the way it is. Apparently it's a new thing).

Let's see if I can help confuse you.
1. Most software will default save in their own format - you need to specify or export a .dxf file which is no big deal.
2. Sheetcam will initially specify start-stop points but you can put them where you want them yourself using the "start points" button. You need to make a "jet tool" and put all your cut specifications (arc voltage, pierce height, cut height etc) into that and Sheetcam will use that info when generating a TAP file. You make various "jet tools" for different materials etc.
3. The TAP file is used as a cut file by Mach (the TAP file is machine G code)
4. If you are using CandCNC hardware and software there are cut profiles available inside Mach. You cannot change settings in the Gcode this way - the Mach profiles are to preset some cut parameters.

Did I succeed in confusing you?
