Pepper Cooker

Post by elkriverfab »

Hey everybody,

I am going to try some of those peppers, they sound good!

I was going to cut out the cooker but I made a few changes to it.

I set perforations on it so a platform could be bent easily.

I also made the top of pepper touch the rest of the design (handles).

I wanted to be able to bend the sides and bend again for legs.

I don't have a bending brake so I have to add perforations to help in bending.

Im sure others could use it too.

Thanks.

What type of finish would you use for this piece?

I'm thinking of powder coating the handles with a high-temp powder and leaving the cooling surface bare, then treating it like you would a cast iron skillet; Heat and oil.

Your thoughts?

Your idea is good.

I was just going to treat it like a cast iron pot.

Oil it and bake it in and just keep it oiled.

I don't know how high temp stove paint would work, I was thinking of that as well.

The high temp powder coating sounds good too.

Hey everybody,

I have added a weld in grate to the pepper cooker.

I figured this would help keep them from falling through.

I welded it in and it looks like it will work.

It's vented to let the heat into the peppers.

I will add a picture in the picture area.

I am going to get a bench top bending brake or something, this was a pain with a piece of wood, clamps and a brass hammer!!!!!

Heres the file!

Spoke with a friend who is an avid outdoors-man who works with stainless (food grade) every day. He said that if you use mild steel and heat it real good and drop it in oil or cover it in oil, that is the best way to season anything that you want to cook on (better than stainless). Just do it outside and away from anything valuable (buildings, vehicles, children, etc.).
Personally, stay away from paint, powdered or not, its a cooking surface and it will eventually peel.
Love the design. I'll make one for doing fish on the fire pit.
Thanks!

I picked up a Horrible Freight bending brake a couple of days ago. It was on sale for $199.00 and as always with HF it's a gamble.

However, I must say that I'm very pleased with it. I used it to bend up the pepper 'handles' on the roaster and it worked just fine. The material is 11ga Hot Rolled Steel.
