Any help with a trace? Dueling Roosters BBQ

Post by shiner2001 »

Wondering if anyone that's more proficient at this kinda thing than I am might be able to give me a hand. I'm learning to trace from drawing, but I'm on a bit of a time crunch right now and have several other jobs to finish up. There's a big charity fundraiser cook off next weekend and one of the cook teams wants a light (like the one attached) made with their logo. It's basically going to be a two layer sign, the background a solid 36" circle and the front (34") will stand a couple inches in front of it with the logo and stuff cut out. I will attach LED's to the back of the top layer. I'd have a little more time to get this done myself, but I also have 77 trophies and a complete boat trailer/propane tank smoker to finish for the same event.

Here's the logo. I'm less worried about the lettering and Texas/Star than the roosters, but will gladly take whatever help anyone might be able to provide. If I need to spend a couple bucks for a "professional tracer" I don't mind that either, I know there are a few of you that do that kinda thing.

Light I've already made, to give you an idea of what I'm shooting for: (Sorry, it flipped last time I posted it too. Not sure why).

Many thanks in advance!!

That file is rough and could not produce a nice cut on a plasma table.

I could trace it for you. What is the deadline?

I pretty much need it ASAP. I'd actually like to get started cutting on it today or tomorrow so that I have time for paint and assembly in order to deliver it by next weekend. Unfortunately there are a few days next week when I'll be out of the shop, so I'm spread really thin. If you think you might be able to knock it out pretty quick, just shoot me a message or something and we can discuss it. The one above it pretty much what I get when I trace bitmap in Inkscape, but it's making the leap from that to a good cut file that's the issue.

There is a LOT of detail in that image which must be cleaned up in order to turn it into a decent cut file. It is not a one-day file conversion.

Is that because of the quality of the jpeg (I had to scan a decal) or just the image in general?

It is a low resolution image. Trying to enlarge it in order to scan it and have a program reliably find the separations between black and brown is difficult. With a bit of time, it could be taken into Photoshop or Illustrator, where the colors could be defined, separated and ultimately removed. Then a path trace with Inkscape would give you a good start on a cut file. It would still need manual manipulation to simplify some of the detail, and create something that you could cut with a plasma table.

I will play with the design just as a personal challenge to make sure *I* could make something out of it, but I cannot get it done by tomorrow, or even Monday.

Just out of curiosity, what is the diameter of the final product you wish to produce? If this is going to be 36" or 48" in diameter, it will require less effort than if it is to be 12" or 18" in diameter.

The final sign will be a background of 36" diameter and the logo will be 34".

I did a nice trace, but this site limits file uploads to iMB and this file is larger. I tried to upload it several times, but I can't make it small enough. Sorry!
